CANBERRA, Aug 27 AAP - Security in the capital of Vanuatu was uncertain and Australiansshould be extra vigilant, the Department of Foreign Affairs warned today.
Instability in the police force had created the security problem in Port Vila, DFATsaid in upgraded travel advice.
"There is an increased possibility of unrest," DFAT said.
"Until further notice, Australians in Port Vila are advised to exercise increased vigilanceand avoid demonstrations and other political gatherings.
"All Australians in Vanuatu should exercise caution and monitor developments, throughthe local media, that might affect their safety."
The recent appointment of a new police commissioner and complaints of political interferencewere fuelling the unrest, Agence France Presse reported.
Yesterday, a magistrate issued arrest warrants against 27 police on charges of mutinyover their role this month in an alleged conspiracy to arrest a group of 15 senior governmentand police officials over the controversial appointment.
But the police officers refused to be taken into custody despite heavily armed soldierssetting up road blocks around the police station.
