MSW: Attackers didn't realise baby was with man, police told
SYDNEY, Aug 18 AAP - A gang which attacked a father and his baby in a Sydney streethad been unaware he had been carrying the five-week-old girl, a man questioned over theassault has told Baby Elizabeth Nune's skull was fractured when her father Jeremy Nunes,who had been cradling her, was beaten last Thursday in Maroubra, in Sydney's south-east.
Superintendent Dave Owens said a 20-year-old, who handed himself in to Maroubra policelast night, was questioned and released but was still assisting officers with their inquiries.
The man told police he had been with three other men and a woman driving around theirlocal area shortly before 8pm (AEST) on Thursday.
When Mr Nunes was spotted, two of the men jumped out of the vehicle and punched and kicked him.
Supt Owens said the man had told police that attackers were not aware Mr Nunes washolding a baby.
The 20-year-old has said he was not involved in the actual attack.
Supt Owens also told reporters investigators believed they were close to capturing the attackers.
"We're hoping conscience will get the better of these people and as a result they'llhand themselves in, otherwise we are coming to investigate and arrest them," he said.
Elizabeth was reported today to be be a serious but stable condition.
